Sep 29 (Field Level Media) – Longtime Red Wings netminder Jimmy Howard was named the goaltenders coach for PWHL Detroit on Tuesday.
Howard, 42, compiled a 246-196-70 record with 24 shutouts, a 2.62 goals- against average and a .912 save percentage in 543 games (523 starts) with the Red Wings from 2005-20. He was an NHL All-Star in 2011-12 and 2018-19.
“Jimmy knows what it means to be a professional athlete in Detroit and knows what hockey means to this city,” general manager Manon Rheaume said. “He was so fortunate to spend his entire career in Detroit, and I know he’s going to bring so much knowledge to our team as our goaltending coach.
“It’s going to be a great opportunity for our goalies to learn from Jimmy, not only on the ice, but also how to manage the mental side of things and the highs and lows you go through playing that position. He’s seen the game played in front of him for 14 seasons and has great insight into what our players can do to bring our team to the next level.”
Howard played in four games (two starts) for the Detroit team that won the Stanley Cup in 2007-08.
“It’s such an incredible honor to be the goaltending coach for PWHL Detroit,” Howard said. “I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such an amazing group of athletes and staff. I’m proud to be part of this team and this city!”
The PWHL expansion team in Detroit begins play this fall and is coached by Josh Sciba.
